Laker's Soccer - A Winning Tradition
More than 80 of Southwest High School’s boys play on four soccer teams—Varsity, Junior Varsity, Sophomore, and Freshmen. Tryouts begin in mid-August and games are scheduled from the end of August through October.
In 2014, the Men's Varsity Soccer team were the reigning Minneapolis conference champions! They had a very successful season and had to beat both the successful programs of Washburn and South in the last couple of games to successfully win bragging rights as Conference Champions! They qualified for the State Tournament and unfortunately lost to St. Louis Park.
In 2013, the Men's Varsity Soccer Team finished the season ranked #1 in the entire state of Minnesota with a record of 16-2-1. They lost 1 -2 in a heart breaker in the quarterfinals of the Minnesota State Soccer Tournament to Andover. They won both the Minneapolis Conference and the 6AA Section Championship. To qualify for the state tournament, the team had to fight from behind 0 - 2 at half time to Wayzata to win 3 - 2 in one of the BEST soccer games ever played by 2 high school teams.
In 2012, the Men's Varsity Soccer Team finished 2nd in the Minneapolis City Conference with a record of 9-5-1. The team lost a season ending shootout in the 1st round of Section playoffs to Roseville.
In 2011, the Men's Varsity Soccer Team finished 3rd in the State with a record of 16-4-1. Southwest was one of the top ranked teams in the state for the entire season.
In 2010, the Men's Varsity Soccer team was a state finalist in the large school division. Their trip to the state finals capped a 21-1 season record. This Lakers team won the Minneapolis conference, beating arch-rival South twice. Southwest was ranked 2nd in the state most of the season.
In 2009, the Men's Varsity Soccer Team finished the season ranked 3rd in the State. The Lakers won the Minneapolis Conference. Their regular season record was 16-1. The varsity scored 76 goals, while only alowing 5. They allowed no goals at home. The boys allowed the least amount of goals of any team in the state.
In 2008, the Men's Varsity Soccer Team finished the season ranked 10th in the state.
The Men's Varsity Soccer Team won the 2007 Conference Championship, the first for the team since 2004. The team's final ranking for the season was #8 in state
In 2006 the Varsity team was the Section 5AA champions, and they placed 4th overall in state.
The team has won 5 section titles and 8 conference championships in the last 10 years
Jamie Plaisance, a 1992 Southwest graduate, begins his 19th year coaching at Southwest and his 13th year as head coach. He leads a staff of 6 coaches.
The program is supported with the help of an active parent booster club that assists with fundraising and volunteering.
